The Mid-Autumn Festival: A Celebration of Reunion under the Moon
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most significant traditional holidays in China. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest. In 2024, this joyous occasion will be celebrated on September 17th.
1. The Cultural Core: Reunion and Thanksgiving
At the heart of the festival lies the theme of family reunion(家庭团圆). Just as the full moon is round and complete, families strive to gather together on this day, sharing a festive meal and enjoying the beautiful moonlight. It is also a time for expressing thanksgiving(感恩)for the harvest and for the blessings in one's life.
2. The Legend: Chang'e Flying to the Moon
No introduction to the Mid-Autumn Festival is complete without the poignant tale of Chang'e(嫦娥). As the story goes, she consumed an elixir of immortality and flew to the moon, where she resides forever, accompanied only by a jade rabbit. On this night, people gaze at the moon, remembering the legend and thinking of their loved ones far away.
3. Iconic Traditions and Delicacies
Moon Gazing (赏月): Admiring the bright full moon is a beloved custom.
Eating Mooncakes (吃月饼): The festival's iconic food, mooncakes(月饼), are round pastries with rich, sweet fillings such as lotus seed paste(莲蓉)or red bean paste(豆沙), often containing salted egg yolks(咸蛋黄)to symbolize the full moon.
Lighting Lanterns (提灯笼): Children often carry brightly lit lanterns, adding to the festive atmosphere.
4.Vocabulary Builder (词汇学习):
Lunar Calendar: 农历
Full Moon: 满月
Family Reunion:
Folklore/Myth:
Elixir:
Symbolize: 象征
